Dr Helen Crilly will be running a College recognised Anaphylaxis Workshop at John Flynn on Saturday morning 1st November 2014. Helen, the ANZAAG Coordinator, ran a workshop at the recent ASA NSC however it was quickly booked out. To satisfy demand for an encore, Helen has graciously agreed to repeat the workshop, giving local Anaesthetists the opportunity to attend at no cost.
You are able to claim this course as an “Emergency Response” activity in your college CPD. If you were on your toes and attended the CICO activity earlier this year you could attend Helen’s workshop and satisfy all your emergency response requirements for the triennium before the end of the first year, all for free!

Workshop description: This 90 minute interactive workshop utilises case discussion and the anaphylaxis box to develop skill with using the ANZAAG/ANZCA Anaphylaxis management guidelines in the event of anaphylaxis emergency. Although paper-based, each participant will be required to consider their own approach to all questions. In all the concentration on the CI-CO workshop, I had forgotten to send out an early notice regarding this meeting this Friday. Alison Herdman will lead a discussion on “The Art of Anaesthesia for Plastic Surgery”. In order to help celebrate American Independence Day, we are holding the annual Difficult Airway Workshop on Friday week. There will be 7-8 work stations with various devices and practice manikins together with the company reps. Anaesthetic staff with experience in the practicalities of using some of these devices will also be there to help with the discussion.
It will be held in the admissions area of the Pindara Hospital operating suite from 5pm to 7pm. OR attire will not be required. The format will be the same as past years with the education related more to the nursing staff between 5 and 6 and more toward doctors from 6 to 7, but come when you are able.
Staff from other areas of the hospital (ICU / ED) that deal in airway management, other hospitals, GPs and anaesthetic trainees are also encouraged to attend. Food and drink will be supplied. It’s on Saturday 26th July, at 9am.
It’s being held in the SAS rooms, Suite 12, 82-86 Minnie St Southport. Everyone is welcome.
The course will be based on the CICO algorithm and packs that have recently been introduced into Allamanda and Pindara.
Due to College requirements numbers are strictly limited, so it’s first in, first served. If you miss out we’ll put you on a reserve list, but don’t worry, the course will be repeated until everyone who wants to do it gets the chance.
If you have already done your CPD Emergency Response Activities, please let those who haven’t have first dibs.

Is this a high fidelity wet lab workshop?
No, this workshop is decidedly Lo-Fi, with airway models made out of old tubes and sticky tape.
Then why on earth should I bother?
It’s good for you! You’ll get to learn the CICO algorithm and practice with the CICO kits that are being introduced into the hospitals.
Will you be serving champagne and caviar?
No, we will not be providing any refreshments, although there will be plenty of water in the tap.
Will you be providing printed handouts, USB sticks, or CD’s?
No, you will be emailed documents prior to the workshop which you can print out. Can you sense a bit of a theme here?
What’s in it for you, and why are you doing this?
Your CICO instructors are not receiving any payments, inducements, or freebies, just a warm fuzzy feeling from helping the local community tackle the new CPD. Cook Medical has helped out by supplying some of the equipment.
